Meeting Street Early Head Start Benefits Young Children and Families

Meeting Street's goal is to support parents' efforts to fulfill their parental roles, and move families toward self-sufficiency. Meeting Street serves 72 eligible young children (birth to age 3) and their families in Providence, RI and 36 children in New Bedford, MA, through our Early Head Start program. Our Program begins before birth with pregnant women to ensure they have access to comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care.

Early Head Start Mission

  • Promote healthy prenatal outcomes for pregnant women
  • Enhance the development of very young children
  • Promote healthy family functioning - working together with the family
  • School Readiness - ensuring children enter Kindergarten ready to learn

"Meeting Street has provided me with the tools to support my child. I have learned many ways to play with her to help her progress."

— EHS Parent

Who is Eligible?

Why Our Program Works

  • Parent Involvement Key to Each Child and Family's Success.
  • We work in collaboration with parents to assess the needs of both the child and the family.
  • Support begins before children are born through the prenatal health services and training provided to pregnant women and continues upon birth and until a child is three years old.
  • Meeting Street respects a family's home culture and language. Bilingual staff members and translation services are available to enhance communication.
  • Meeting Street collaborates with all EHS families to create a Family Partnership Agreement (FPA) that is developed to meet the specific needs of each child and their family.
  • Parent training and support groups are offered to EHS parents and every family is provided access to community resources so they can make connections that will enhance their family's functioning.
  • Each month, parents have the opportunity to participate in the EHS Parents' Committee held at Meeting Street each month in the evening. While parents meet, their children participate in activities providing a chance for them to socialize with other children their age.
  • Eligible families have the option to receive Early Head Start support and services in their own homes.
