Colby’s Story
You'll always find a smile on Colby's face
Colby is in Kindergarten here at Meeting Street and has a number of developmental delays because of the shaken baby syndrome he suffered as a baby. His challenges are physical, verbal, cognitive and he has ongoing seizures.
Nevertheless, this bright, spirited child is performing at his grade level in both reading and math and is progressing at the rate of a peer without special needs...vivid testimony of his desire to succeed and the marvelous support he receives from his parents and the truly extraordinary staff at our Grace School.
Colby has also benefited from the occupational, physical and speech therapy he receives in addition to his regular school curriculum. He uses a wheelchair, but is learning to walk in a walker. His verbal skills are limited, but he uses sign language and a computer device that allows him to pick out the words he wants to say. The program also tells jokes...and telling jokes is one of Colby's favorite things.
With his red hair, twinkling green eyes, and contagious smile, Colby is one of the most popular students at Meeting Street.
Since coming to Meeting Street, Colby has developed excellent social skills and participates in activities like Challenger baseball, music and movement classes for children with special needs...and his calendar is always filled with play dates with friends from school.
"My husband and I knew that Meeting Street was going to be the best place for Colby to learn and grow so we did everything possible to get him here. From the first day, we saw how happy he was to be with the other children, both the kids that had disabilities and those who did not. He couldn't be happier and neither could we," said Colby's mom in a recent interview.
