Get Ready for the Future at The Carter School
The Carter School is our high school for young adults with special needs, located in Providence, Rhode Island. Our year-round program works with students experiencing complex cognitive or physical delays and/or high medical needs.
Our innovative approach to special education extends far beyond the classroom, providing vocational, recreational and social opportunities tailored to each student’s specific interests and abilities.
What sets The Carter School apart?
- In-house nursing services
- Occupational, physical and speech-language therapies delivered in both classroom and one-to-one settings
- On-site aquatic therapy pool
- Our team of dedicated, highly trained and compassionate staff committed to ensuring each child reaches their full potential
We all want the best for our students. We want them to be included and to be part of the community that they work in, that they live in, and that they’re part of, just like everybody else.
– Kathy Acciola-Chan, Carter School Teacher
Our Program
The Carter School is comprised of three centers that focus on community-based learning (CBL). Each center parallels a key school-to-career goal reflected in a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
Education Center
Focuses on functional academics and the development of communication, self-advocacy and socio-emotional behavior skills. Experiential learning is a central to this model.
Employment Center
Designed to prepare students for entry into the working world. We focus individually with students to identify their interests and skill levels, utilizing an eight-stage process of on-site and community-based work placements that prioritize inclusive experiences with their peers. Our goal is to maximize our students’ potential to become active adults within their community.
Life Skills Center
Here, students learn the essentials of independent living – personal care, cooking, cleaning, laundry and making a bed – in our on-site apartment designed to mimic a one-bedroom, ADA-compliant apartment.
Our Inclusive Programs
In partnership with local high schools, we offer an on-site “Buddies” program where students visit once each week to build friendships and foster an inclusive environment.
